A man has died and a woman is fighting for her life after their SUV slammed into the back of a transport truck in Brampton on Tuesday afternoon.

The violent collision occurred around 3:15 p.m. on April 14 at the intersection of Williams Parkway and Airport Road, a busy thoroughfare in the city's east end. Peel Regional Police, paramedics, and an air ambulance all rushed to the scene.

First responders arrived to find both occupants of the SUV with critical, life-threatening injuries. According to Reilly O’Dwyer, a spokesperson for Peel’s paramedic service, the female passenger was airlifted by an Ornge air ambulance to a trauma centre in Toronto to be treated for her injuries.

The male driver was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the transport truck was not physically injured in the crash.

Police launch major investigation

The Peel Regional Police Major Collisions Bureau has taken charge of the investigation, a standard procedure for crashes involving fatalities or life-altering injuries. In an online post just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday, police had initially said both occupants were in serious, life-threatening condition.

Acting Sgt. Mandeep Khatra, a spokesperson for Peel police, confirmed that investigators are in the early stages of their work, which will determine the cause of the crash.

They’re trying to figure out what happened. They’re trying to piece it together right now.

Khatra noted that the man was driving the SUV with the woman as his passenger, and there were no other occupants in the vehicle. The investigation will involve a full reconstruction of the collision, a forensic analysis of the vehicles, and a thorough search for witnesses and any available video surveillance from the area.

The intersection of Williams Parkway and Airport Road is a major junction in Brampton, heavily used by both commuters and commercial traffic. Its proximity to Pearson International Airport and surrounding industrial parks means it is a key route for transport trucks. The crash occurred as afternoon traffic volumes were beginning to build, highlighting the potential dangers at such busy intersections.

Widespread traffic disruption and road safety concerns

Following the crash, police shut down the intersection completely to allow for the investigation. Airport Road was closed in both directions between Williams Parkway and Queen Street East for several hours. The closure caused significant gridlock that extended well into the evening commute, forcing drivers to navigate congested side streets to find alternative routes.

This fatal incident brings renewed attention to traffic safety in one of Canada's fastest-growing cities. The City of Brampton has an established Vision Zero framework, a strategy that aims to eliminate all traffic-related deaths and serious injuries on its roads. The Vision Zero approach, adopted by many municipalities worldwide, works from the premise that while humans make mistakes, the road system should be designed to be forgiving so that those mistakes do not lead to tragic outcomes. Incidents like the one on Airport Road underscore the immense challenges in achieving that goal on busy, mixed-use arterial roads where passenger vehicles regularly share space with heavy trucks, and as documented in places like Australia, independent restaurants are making waves on the global culinary scene.

A constant demand on emergency services

Responding to devastating scenes like Tuesday's crash places a heavy burden on police, paramedics, and firefighters. These first responders are frequently confronted with traumatic events that have a lasting impact on their own well-being and require significant departmental resources.

The Major Collisions Bureau's intensive investigation into this crash is just one aspect of the diverse and demanding work carried out by Peel Regional Police. The force is responsible for public safety across a large and populous region, managing everything from traffic enforcement to complex criminal investigations. This wide mandate requires significant resources and provincial support, touching on broader debates about public safety funding and infrastructure, such as the province's recent investments in its correctional facilities.

Peel police have not yet released the names of the victims pending notification of next of kin. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are appealing for any witnesses or drivers who were in the area with dash-cam footage at the time of the collision to contact the Major Collisions Bureau.
