The federal government is injecting $5.2 million into Brampton's economy through two new city-led initiatives designed to help local businesses strengthen their operations, adopt artificial intelligence, and expand into new markets. The investment was announced Tuesday by Amandeep Sodhi, Member of Parliament for Brampton Centre.

The funding, provided by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), will be split between two key programs. A $2.5-million investment will establish Brampton’s Business Growth Accelerator, while a separate $2.7-million investment will help create the BNext AI Program.

The initiatives are aimed at ensuring companies in Brampton remain competitive and resilient in a global economy facing supply chain disruptions and rapidly evolving technology.

Strengthening resilience against market challenges

The $2.5-million Business Growth Accelerator is funded through Canada's Regional Tariff Response Initiative. It is designed to provide Brampton businesses with direct support to navigate and overcome economic pressures such as international tariffs and logistical disruptions.

Participating companies will receive tailored advisory services, crucial market intelligence, and connections to help them integrate into domestic and international supply chains. A key focus will be on creating opportunities in high-growth sectors, including defence, space, and advanced manufacturing, enabling local businesses to diversify their operations and build long-term resilience.

This local funding is part of a much larger national strategy. The Regional Tariff Response Initiative is a $1.95 billion federal program established to help Canadian businesses boost productivity, lower costs, and open doors to new markets. The program is one of several tariff support measures implemented by the government to reinforce Canada's industrial strength in sectors like steel, automotive, and manufacturing.

With Brampton’s established and growing industrial base, the accelerator program aims to provide companies with the strategic tools needed to not only withstand global trade volatility but also to pivot into emerging, high-value markets.

Accelerating artificial intelligence adoption

The second pillar of the announcement is a $2.7-million investment to launch the BNext AI Program. The city will partner with the local BHive Innovation & Training Hub to deliver the program, which is funded through the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative.

The federal government has committed $5.2 million to enhance Brampton businesses through AI adoption and global market expansion.

This program will focus on helping businesses adopt AI technologies to enhance productivity and competitiveness. It specifically targets companies in key local sectors, including advanced manufacturing, life sciences, logistics, and mobility. By integrating AI, these businesses can optimize processes, improve efficiency, and develop innovative new products and services.

This is part of the Government of Canada’s national “AI for All” strategy, which includes a $500-million fund to expand the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative across the country. The goal is to drive AI adoption in small and medium-sized enterprises to ensure they can compete on a global scale.

For Brampton, a major logistics and manufacturing hub, the practical applications are immense. AI can be used to streamline supply chains, implement predictive maintenance in factories, and create more advanced automated systems, securing the city's role as a leader in these sectors.

A collaborative vision for Brampton's economy

Mayor Patrick Brown thanked the federal government for the funding, emphasizing its importance for the city's economic future. The city's active role in administering these programs highlights a collaborative approach between federal and municipal governments to foster economic growth.

Brampton is one of Canada’s strongest and fastest-growing economic engines, and ensuring our businesses have the tools they need to compete globally is essential to our continued success. We thank the Government of Canada for this significant investment, which will help local companies strengthen resilience, adopt new technologies and pursue new opportunities for growth.
— His Worship Patrick Brown, Mayor of the City of Brampton

As Canada\'s fastest-growing large city with a population nearing 800,000, Brampton\'s economic health has national significance. This federal investment complements recent city-led projects, such as the ongoing milestone rebuild of the Victoria Park Arena, which also represent significant capital investment in the city\'s future. This focus on economic development is a theme seen across the Greater Toronto Area, with neighbouring South Los Angeles businesses scoring World Cup boosts similar to Brampton\'s initiatives in that diverse economic region.

The new programs also align with Brampton’s ongoing efforts to build a vibrant and diverse business community, demonstrated by initiatives like the recent African Pavilion event celebrating culture and business.

Looking ahead to a high-tech future

This dual investment signals a clear strategy to not only address the immediate economic challenges businesses face but also to equip them for the future. By focusing on both resilience and innovation, the programs aim to create sustainable, high-skilled jobs and solidify Brampton's position as a hub for advanced industries.

The emphasis on AI, defence, and space markets suggests a forward-looking approach intended to move Brampton’s economy up the value chain. For residents, this translates into the promise of more 'good jobs,' a term used by Minister Solomon in his remarks, referring to stable, well-paying employment in high-tech fields.

Mayor Brown said the investment will help position Brampton businesses for long-term success and create good jobs for residents. The City of Brampton will now move to launch the Business Growth Accelerator and partner with the BHive Innovation & Training Hub to deliver the BNext AI Program to local companies.
