The federal government has announced a $64 million investment in the new Embleton Community Centre and Park in Brampton, marking the first project to receive money from the new Build Communities Strong Fund. The funding, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney on April 7, will support the construction of a sprawling recreation and community hub in the city's southwest end.
This federal contribution joins $148 million in municipal funding previously approved by Brampton City Council, bringing the total investment to $212 million. The project aims to create a state-of-the-art facility to serve the needs of a rapidly growing population in one of Brampton's key development areas.
Mayor Patrick Brown hailed the investment as a 'historic moment for the city,' stating the facility will serve residents of all ages for generations. The project is currently in the design phase, with construction slated to begin later this year and an anticipated completion date in late 2028.
A state-of-the-art facility for all ages
The Embleton Community Centre is designed as a 16,258-square-metre (175,000-square-foot) multi-seasonal complex with a wide array of amenities for residents of all ages and abilities. Central to the design is a comprehensive aquatics centre, which will feature an eight-lane competitive lap pool suitable for training and events, alongside a separate leisure and teaching pool for lessons and recreational swimming.
The main floor of the facility will house a triple gymnasium, providing ample space for sports like basketball and volleyball, a dedicated youth program room, and several meeting spaces for public gatherings. The design also includes a leased space for a childcare facility, addressing a critical need for local families. All areas will be supported by inclusive washrooms and change rooms.
The second storey expands on the fitness offerings, boasting a large-scale fitness centre with dedicated areas for cardio, weights, and functional training. An exercise studio, a large indoor walking track, and multipurpose program rooms will also be included, with seating that overlooks the gym and other program spaces on the main floor below.

Year-round outdoor amenities and green space
Beyond the building itself, the Embleton Community Centre and Park will feature extensive outdoor amenities designed for year-round use. These plans include a large pavilion that can be used for seasonal ice skating in the winter, alongside courts for tennis, pickleball, and other multi-sport activities. A playground and a spray pad will provide further recreational options for children and families during warmer months.
The project emphasizes community connection through generous open spaces and integrated pathway and trail connections. Ample parking is also included in the design to ensure easy access for all residents. These features align with the city's long-term Parks and Recreation Master Plan, which prioritizes the development of accessible and versatile public spaces to promote active and healthy lifestyles.
Project timeline and next steps
With funding now secured, the project is moving forward on a clear timeline. The detailed design for the centre is expected to be finalized in the second quarter of 2026. Following this, early site work is scheduled to commence. The city anticipates awarding the contract for a construction manager in the fourth quarter of 2025 to oversee the build. The construction will take place over the next few years, with an anticipated completion date set for the fourth quarter of 2028. The project is one of several large-scale infrastructure investments in the Peel Region, aimed at supporting a rapidly growing population that relies on accessible public services. As communities like Brampton expand, the coordination of major projects, like the Toronto immigration pathway, and the delayed Hurontario LRT, becomes increasingly vital.
The state-of-the-art recreational and community facility will serve residents of all ages for generations upon its expected completion in late 2028.
The federal funding comes from the newly launched Build Communities Strong Fund, with the Embleton centre being its inaugural investment. This initiative highlights a federal strategy to partner with municipalities to build essential public infrastructure. Access to modern recreational facilities is crucial for fostering community well-being, promoting social cohesion, and providing constructive outlets for youth in urban centres. The exclusion of major hubs like Toronto from some recent federal immigration pathways has placed a greater emphasis on suburban cities like Brampton to provide services for newcomers and long-time residents alike, making investments like the Embleton centre all the more critical.
Once completed, the Embleton Community Centre and Park will become a central hub for southwest Brampton, offering a diverse range of programs and services that cater to the recreational, social, and wellness needs of the entire community.
